Base Layer
- 1 cup Dark Brown Sugar
- 1 cup Butter
- Saltine Crackers (enough to cover a 9×13-inch pan, approximately 40-45 crackers)
Topping
- 12 oz. Chocolate Chips (semisweet or milk chocolate)
- Optional toppings: crushed nuts, sprinkles, sea salt, or mini peppermint pieces
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit to get it ready for baking the toffee layer.
- Prepare the Pan: Line a 9 by 13-inch baking pan with aluminum foil, allowing some overhang for easy removal later. Arrange a single layer of saltine crackers evenly across the bottom of the pan.
- Make Toffee Sauce: In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of butter and 1 cup of dark brown sugar. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture comes to a rolling boil. Let it boil for 3 minutes while stirring continuously to prevent burning.
- Pour Toffee Over Crackers: Immediately pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the layer of saltine crackers, ensuring all crackers are coated.
- Bake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 7 minutes. This helps the toffee set and bubble up.
- Add Chocolate Topping: Remove the pan from the oven and immediately sprinkle the 12 oz. chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee layer. Allow the chocolate to sit for a few minutes so it melts.
- Spread Chocolate: Using a spatula, spread the melted chocolate evenly over the entire surface, as you would frost a cake.
- Add Optional Toppings: If desired, sprinkle your choice of toppings like chopped nuts, sprinkles, sea salt, or crushed peppermint bits over the melted chocolate before it sets.
- Cool and Serve: Refrigerate the pan for at least 2 hours or until the chocolate and toffee are fully set. Once cooled, lift the foil to remove the slab, break into pieces, and enjoy your Christmas Crack!
Notes
- Use dark brown sugar for a richer, deeper flavor; light brown sugar can be substituted but will yield a milder taste.
- Make sure to stir constantly when boiling the sugar and butter to prevent burning.
- If the chocolate does not melt well, you can place the pan back in the oven for a few seconds.
- For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free crackers instead of saltines.
- Store Christmas Crack in an airtight container at room temperature or in the fridge for up to two weeks.
- Be cautious not to overbake the toffee or it can become too hard and difficult to break.
