Creamy Mashed Potatoes Recipe

4.4 from 82 reviews

Creamy Mashed Potatoes are a classic comfort food made from tender russet potatoes mashed with rich butter and smooth heavy cream, then seasoned perfectly with salt and pepper and garnished with fresh chives for a subtle oniony flavor.

Ingredients

Scale

Potatoes

  • 2 lbs russet potatoes, peeled and cubed

Dairy & Seasonings

  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • Salt, to taste
  • Pepper, to taste
  • Fresh chives, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Boil Potatoes: Place the peeled and cubed russet potatoes into a large pot of salted water. Bring to a boil and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are very tender and easily pierced with a fork.
  2. Drain and Mash: Drain the cooked potatoes thoroughly and return them to the pot or a large mixing bowl. Add the butter and heavy cream and mash the potatoes until smooth and creamy, ensuring there are no lumps.
  3. Season and Garnish: Season the mashed potatoes with salt and pepper to taste, mixing thoroughly. Transfer to a serving dish and sprinkle fresh chopped chives on top as a garnish to add a mild onion flavor and a pop of color.

Notes

  • For fluffier mashed potatoes, you can use a potato ricer instead of a traditional masher.
  • Warm the cream and butter slightly before adding to avoid cooling the potatoes down.
  • Adjust the amount of cream and butter to reach your desired consistency and richness.
  • Fresh chives can be substituted or complemented with parsley or green onions for garnish.
  • Use russet potatoes for the best fluffy texture; Yukon Gold potatoes will yield a creamier but denser mash.
